Microsoft Unlimited Potential Curriculum
IDEA Centers use the Microsoft Unlimited Potential Community Learning Curriculum for their courses. The UP Curriculum provides a foundation for teaching basic to intermediate technical skills. Specifically designed for community learning centers and telecenters, the curriculum aims to help individuals develop skills that apply to real-world challenges and opportunities, gain critical twenty-first century workforce skills needed for today's "knowledge economy" and to broaden digital inclusion.

Each IDEA center is encouraged to customize the curriculum to meet the needs of their particular students or the local economy

Upon successful completion of computer courses, trainees receive personal Microsoft Unlimited Potential certificates, the authenticity of which can be checked by any employer on the IDEA Project’s web-site.

Success stories will tell you how IDEA participants use their knowledge and skills in their daily life and work.

Computer Fundamentals

Description Course:
Computer Fundamentals is an introduction to information and communication technology, with a focus on computers and networking technologies. The course introduces students to the fundamental internal and external hardware components necessary for the operation of the computer. Similarly, it instructs students in the importance and function of the operating system, productivity applications, and networking communications technologies and their roles in enabling technologies for consumers and information workers. The course provides an introduction to and overview of word processing, Spreadsheets, presentation software, and Internet-related tools. Students leave the course with a fundamental understanding of the possible uses of the computer as a powerful tool and a basic set of skills necessary to operate the computer in a productive and meaningful manner.

Digital Media Fundamentals

Description Course:
Digital Media Fundamentals is designed to teach students the wide range of possibilities for using computer-based digital media to capture, manipulate, and refine music, photo, and video. The course will teach students how to get started with digital photography, including choosing a camera, taking good photographs, and manipulating the results. Students learn how to how to edit and enrich media files using a wide variety of digital-processing tools. They learn how to work with Microsoft Movie Maker to capture video and audio to their computers, import existing digital media files, edit video clips, add special effects, and save and send movies.

Internet and World Wide Web Fundamentals

Description Course:
Internet and World Wide Web Fundamentals teaches how to explore the Web, use search engines, work with electronic mail (e-mail), and create Web pages with Microsoft FrontPage®. Early lessons have students connecting to the Internet, printing Web pages, and learning about security in cyberspace. Students then gain a basic understanding of the tools of Microsoft Outlook®, which they will use to manage and organize personal data and e-mail. In later lessons, students learn how to join newsgroups and work with instant messaging software. The course concludes with two lessons on the use of FrontPage to create Web pages, design Web sites, and post a home page to the Web.

Web Design Fundamentals

Description Course:
Web Design Fundamentals teaches the complete process of Web page design, from the basics of HTML to strategies for designing and building a complete Web site. Students begin by exploring the anatomy of a typical Web page, creating a simple HTML page, and learning to work with Web text and graphics. An important emphasis in this course is to teach students sound principles for designing web sites, which includes creating paper prototypes. The course includes a thorough primer in HTML coding that serves as a solid grounding for the use of FrontPage in the last two lessons. Students learn to use FrontPage to create a moderately complex home page that they can post to the Web.

Word Processing Fundamentals

Description Course:
Word Processing Fundamentals focuses on how to use a word processor to write and revise a variety of personal and business documents, from simple letters and memos to complex documents. Students begin by drafting and editing simple Word documents, soon graduating to the use of templates and techniques for sophisticated formatting. Later lessons address the larger issues of document design to have students work with page margins, paragraph indenting and spacing, tab settings, page numbering, page setup, and headers and footers. Students learn to incorporate graphics in Word documents, add columns, and work with tables. They round out their Word skills by learning to send documents as e-mail attachment, view documents in Web preview, and save Word files as Web pages.

Presentation Fundamentals

Description Course:
Presentation Fundamentals teaches everything students need to know about putting together persuasive electronic presentations, from creating basic slide shows to adding graphics, video, and audio for rich multimedia presentations. Early lessons have students creating, adding, and formatting their first presentations. Students then develop the skills to work with PowerPoint design templates and slide masters. Next, they learn how to enrich their slide show presentations with graphics, animations, sounds, video clips, and various automated features. Finally, they learn various techniques for working collaboratively with PowerPoint presentations and publish their presentations to the World Wide Web.

Database Fundamentals

Description Course:
Database Fundamentals introduces the basics of using a relational database to create tables, forms, and reports. Students begin by learning basic database concepts and are soon creating their own database tables with Microsoft Access 2002. They learn how to edit and modify tables, as well as how to organize and store information in tables. Students build on this foundation to create and run queries, specify criteria, create calculated fields, and create multiple-table queries. A final chapter has students create an Access report using different methods, add controls to a report, format a report, and create calculated controls.

Spreadsheet Fundamentals

Description Course:
Spreadsheet Fundamentals teaches the basics of spreadsheet concepts, which includes creating worksheets, editing data, building charts, and publishing a spreadsheet to the Web. In early lessons, students create, edit, and print worksheets, soon learning to format rows, columns, and cells. They gain expertise with margins, page breaks, and various print options. They learn to hide and unhide data, add and delete worksheets in workbook, create a three-dimensional formula, and link workbooks. Students then create, edit, format, revise, and print charts. In later lessons, they perform basic Excel calculation with formulas and functions. In a final lesson, students create hyperlinks in a worksheet, save worksheets and workbooks as a Web pages, send workbooks via e-mail, and add comments to workbook sheets.
